le mans series - nurburgring.
Loughborough racing driver, Stuart Moseley, made a spectacular entrance to the Le Mans Series (LMS) championship this weekend, qualifying in the top ten and leading the LMP2 race. The 28-year-old, who is fresh from completing the famous Le Mans 24hrs, has joined Team Bruichladdich Radical to compete in the remaining LMS rounds. Driving the team’s Radical SR9 he did not waste any time making his mark, securing second place in the LMP2 class (10th overall) to the delight of his team.
“We had so many problems and issues to sort out in testing that we didn’t know what was going to happen in qualifying,” said Moseley. “The team actually clapped when I got back to the garage!”.
Moseley started the six hour race and within three laps was up into the LMP2 class lead. Despite intense pressure from Le Mans 24hrs winner, Tommy Erdos, the 28-year-old held onto his position for 30 minutes. “It’s ironic really,” said Moseley. “Thirteen years ago Tommy Erdos was one of my instructors and now I’ve raced against him for the first time. I would say those 30 minutes were relatively difficult! He was definitely quicker than we were. Our car was so new we hadn’t had time to work on the set up so in the slow corners he had the edge but we had more pace going into the fast corners.”
After a heroic struggle, Erdos gathered pace along the start finish straight and out-braked Moseley into the first corner. Moseley then tangled with a Porsche, putting him onto the grass and down the field. The team was struck by further misfortune when the car’s turbo pipe cracked, requiring a pit stop which cost them eight laps, but in LMS that is no reason to give up. “In this series, when you’re that far down, it’s very frustrating but to get classified as a finisher you have to be on the circuit,” said Moseley. “Even if the leader has raced 20 laps more than you, but conks out just before the chequered flag, technically you’ve beaten him.”
In the end, Moseley and his co-driver, Tim Greaves, finished fifth in LMP2 after 171 laps. “Considering that the car had only done 20 laps before we left England, to qualify in the top quarter of the grid and lead our class is fantastic – more than we could have wished for.”
The team will now be competing in the remaining 2006 rounds, the next being at Donington Park on August 26th / 27th, just a few miles from Moseley’s home.
