radical enduro - thruxton.
Loughborough's Stuart Mosely took his second Radical Enduro victory of the year at Thruxton this weekend - almost ten years to the day since he took his first ever career victory at the Hampshire circuit. The result puts him firmly in the running for the championship title - just 57 points behind leaders, Quaife / Orolar, with nearly 200 still to play for.
"It's about the fastest circuit in the country and it's definitely close to my heart," said Moseley, who still holds the Vauxhall Lotus Championship Class B lap record at Thruxton, which he set in 1996, alongside the Class A record set by F1 World Champion, Mika Hakkinen."
"I had my very first car race there and my first race win, but I haven't been back for eight years. It's still familiar because of the coaching work I do though and I guess it suits my driving style. It's a difficult circuit to learn but it's got a flow to it."
True to form, Moseley was again setting records this weekend, racking up the fastest Radical lap time at the circuit Ð one of the quickest in the country - with an average speed of 120mph. His pace earned the 28-year-old pole position for the second of Sunday's races and he started from P2 for the first. "I was going at more than 150mph into the chicane," said Moseley, who competed in this year's Le Mans 24hrs. "It's a little bit surreal. I think it felt faster than doing 200mph at Le Mans. It must be something to do with the scenery and the bumpy track surface."
In the weekend's first race Moseley was quickly into the lead after a lightening start. He pulled out a sizeable gap before the car's rear diffuser came loose and cost the team two laps in the pitlane meaning they could finish no higher than fifth. In the second race Moseley took over from co-driver, Tim Greaves, inheriting second place with a five second gap to the leader.
"I started to close the gap but then we got a high oil temperature so I had to nurse the car a little bit," he said. "Just as I caught the leader we had a safety car for a few laps and as it went back into the pits I managed to get the lead. It was quite a good move in a place where you'd probably least expect it. I caught him by surprise."
Moseley maintained his lead to the chequered flag to score the team's second win of the season.
The next round of the Radical Enduro championship is at Croft on September 10th.
